United bowed out of the League Challenge Cup at the Preliminary Round stage on Tuesday evening against fellow Oxfordshire side, Didcot Town

Manager Mark West made six changes from the side that had defeated Yaxley ten days previously, with debuts for recent signings Laurence Clark (Risborough Rangers) and Ben Cullen (Shifnal Town).

The opening exchanges of the match were fairly even, but it was the hosts who took the lead on 20 minutes when United failed to clear a corner from the right and the ball fell to Matt Woodley who drilled a left foot shot wide of Hill and in to the bottom corner from the edge of the box. United were quick to respond and, on 24 minutes, a through ball from Finlay Murray found Marcus Mealing in space and, bearing down on goal, he placed the ball wide of Crowther in the home goal for the equaliser.

And it was United who then took the lead on 30 minutes when Mealing intercepted a pass across the Didcot back line and raced clear before placing the ball high in to the roof of the net, giving Crowther no chance. However, that lead lasted only two minutes when Didcot won a free kick 25 yards from goal and Seth Humphries placed the ball over the wall and in to the top corner. Shortly before the break the home side took the lead for a second time with Caelan Isaac on the left wing striking a low shot across goal that deflected off a Thame defender and wide of Hill.

After a frantic first half, one could have been forgiven for expecting a tighter second half, but after only three minutes United had equalised. Neat interplay down the Thame left saw winger Harry Scott put through on the left and, as he cut in to the box, he expertly placed his shot under Crowther and in to the net for his first goal for United.

Both sides continued to press for a winner, with Mealing going close to a hat-trick, and substitute Liam Tack forcing Crowther in to a save low to his left from a free kick. Indeed, it was from a United attack that Didcot broke quickly to score a fourth goal, with winger MacDonald crossing for Akinlusi to strike low from 8 yards.

Then, as United pressed for an equaliser, Didcot wrapped-up the game in stoppage time when Akinlusi struck an unstoppable shot in to the roof of the net from 20 yards.
