A brace each from Andy Gledhill and Lynton Goss was enough to send United through to the next round of the FA Vase on Saturday

Facing fellow Hellenic League side Royal Wootton Bassett Town – a team whom United had beaten 3-0 a few weeks ago - United opened brightly and pinned the home side in their own half. After a succession of corners and a well-saved effort from Lynton Goss, United took the lead on 8 minutes. Another Goss corner from the right was floated in to the box where the unmarked Andy Gledhill headed home from close range. And it was the same combination ten minutes later as Gledhill headed home another Goss corner, to take his tally to 21 goals in only 11 matches.

Having taken a 2-0 lead, United sat back and the home side started to enjoy more possession, albeit without troubling Henry Craven in the Thame goal. Indeed, United had opportunities to extend the lead, with Gledhill placing a header over the bar from a David Lynn cross, before a neat one-two on the edge of the box put Ben Connelly through, only for Meare in the home goal to smother the shot.

However, five minutes before the break the home side pulled a goal back. A hotly contested corner was eventually delivered to the far side of the box, before being returned back across goal, where Steve Robertson was on hand to finish well.

The second half started in similar vein to the first half, with United pressing in an attempt to re-gain their two-goal cushion. That duly arrived on 59 minutes, when Goss ran on to a through ball from Tom Ashworth, and placed the ball beyond the advancing Meare. The home side pressed to get back in to the game and, with 15 minutes to go scored their second, when a deflected effort from substitute Steve Yeardley beat Craven.

United, however, maintained their composure and put the result beyond doubt with five minutes to go, as Goss again beat the off-side trap, evaded the retreating defenders, and powerfully shot across Meare and in to the far corner of the goal. For the remainder of the game United kept the ball in their opponents half, with the only effort of note being a free kick from Dan West that was saved by Meare.

United:

Craven, Dugmore, Lynn, Hayes, Harrison, Ashworth, Connelly (Gray), Goss (Evans), Gledhill, West, Ricketts.
