A second 1-0 win in a week maintained United’s position in the play offs as they showed resilience to beat a spirited Cambridge City.

The only change from the side that had beaten Kidlington on New Years Day saw David Lyons replace Craig Hill in goal – his first competitive game of football for over a year – and he gave a solid and assured display throughout.

The opening exchanges were fairly even before the visitors started to exert some pressure in the Thame half, with Lyons getting down well to take a low shot on 9 minutes. United responded and had a goal disallowed shortly afterwards when West was adjudged to have fouled Cambridge City keeper Jamie Head. The visitors went back on the front foot but were unable to find a way through a disciplined Thame defence and, instead, it was united who scored the only goal of the game on 26 minutes. Good play down the Thame left resulted in Lynton Goss winning a free kick near the corner flag. Goss floated the free kick over and Dan West somehow managed to get his head to the ball and arc it back over Head and in to the net.

The goal invigorated the home side and they started to enjoy more possession in the Cambridge half. However, the only meaningful action in the remainder of the half was a free kick for United some 25 yards from goal that Head comfortably collected from West.

Within the first few minutes of the second half United had an opportunity to extend the lead when a ball in to the box came back to Tom Ashworth whose goal bound effort was block. Still the away side enjoyed plenty of possession and Lyons was called in to action on 55 minutes to make a goal saving stop. United, by this stage, were content to play on the break and they almost made it 2-0 on 64 minutes when Goss went on a typical run down the right before finding space in the area, only for his shot to be wide of the mark and hit the side netting. Again Cambridge came back at United but stubborn defending and good handling by Lyons again limited any opportunities. Indeed, United had another chance on 78 minutes when Head came for a long ball that he failed to collect on the edge of the Cambridge box, with the ball collected by Matt Peake-Pijnen who, with back to goal, turned but saw his floated effort just sail the wrong side of the post.

The final few minutes were all Cambridge, with a shot cleared from near the line and a deflected effort requiring a quick reaction save from Lyons.

As it was United saw out the remainder of the game to claim another three points with a solid and resolute defensive display. The win keeps United fourth in the table.
