United progressed to the next round of the FA Trophy on Tuesday evening with a hard fought win against Larkhall Athletic.

The only changes from the goalless draw on Saturday saw Lynton Goss come in to the side for brother Aston, who dropped to the bench, with Liam Tack moving to the right side of midfield and Laurence Clark to the left.

The game started brightly for United and, with only five minutes on the clock, Marcus Mealing won a free kick 30 yards from goal and stepped-up to hit an unstoppable effort in to the roof of the net via the underside of the bar. United continued to press and, on 9 minutes, the returning Lynton Goss saw an effort from an acute angle pushed on to the post by Semmens in the Larkhall goal. It was to be a busy couple of minutes for Semmens as, only two minutes later, Tack was upended in the box with Semmens guessing well to save to spot kick from Mealing low to his right. The penalty save knocked some of the momentum from the home side and, gradually, the visitors began to assert themselves, relying on long cross field balls to stretch the play.

However, it was United who came closest to scoring on 26 minutes when Ashworth squared along the six yard box with Clark unable to wrap his foot around the ball sufficiently and the effort went wide of the post without troubling Semmens. Five minutes later and Clark was presented with another opportunity as he stepped inside on the edge of the box and struck a shot that beat Semmens but was cleared off the line. It was not to be his day as, with three minutes left in the half, he did well to control a deep cross on the edge of the penalty area before seeing his effort go just wide.

The visitors started the second half strongly and, on 49 minutes, Craig Hill in the Thame goal did well to save a short by Hope. Shortly afterwards Mealing was presented with an opportunity, collecting a ball from Lynton Goss on the edge of the six yard box but was unable to get his shot away before the ball was cleared. Aston Goss then replaced Clark on 59 minutes and, almost immediately, set up an opportunity for Lynton Goss, but the shot went wide. Hope then saw an effort go wide for Larkhall before Lynton Goss was put through on goal but Semmens came out to bravely collect the ball. Three minutes and Lynton Goss saw another effort saved by Semmens as United struggled to put the game beyond the visitors. After a spate of bookings the next opportunity came in injury time as the visitors pressed for an equaliser. And United will be indebted to Hill who, on 94 minutes, did well to push a shot from Clarke over the bar. United then stubbornly defended a number of corners before the referee drew the game to a close.

United will now host Bristol Manor Farm in the next round on Saturday 27 October.
