United won the South Oxfordshire derby on Tuesday evening against a battling Henley Town side.

Despite the win, United struggled to find any real fluidity for periods of the game and, indeed, it was the visitors who looked the more likely to score in the opening period. They nearly did so within the first 30 seconds when a loose cross field pass was collected 25 yards from goal, with the Henley forward driving the shot just wide of the post. United, on the other hand, were struggling to penetrate a well-marshalled Henley defence, with Hill in the visiting goal rarely troubled.

However, shortly after Henley had struck the post in the 41st minute, United took the lead. Luke Ricketts collected the ball in his own half before going on a run down the Thame left, reaching the bye-line and crossing to Andy Gledhill whose mis-hit effort from close range took a deflection off a Henley defender and in to the back of the net.

Leading 1-0 at half time, United started the second half with Manager Mark West’s words ringing in their ears, and they were immediately on the front foot. Five minutes in to the half, Melvy Nsomi made a strong run down the right before pulling the ball back to Gledhill on the edge of the box, whose shot was saved, with the ricochet falling to Ricketts, whose effort was then blocked. United continued to press, with Gledhill heading over when well placed, and a Dan West header going wide of the post. Eventually the second goal arrived when West was adjudged to have been fouled in the box, and Gledhill placed the ball wide of Hill for his 28th goal of the season.

Dan Pounds was introduced with 20 minutes to go and he immediately put a searching cross in to the Henley box, before then driving an effort just wide. Gledhill was then presented with an opportunity to score his third, but Hill saved well with his legs before the follow-up was blocked. As the game entered the final five minutes, Henley won a number of free kicks and corners, but Craven in the Thame goal was rarely threatened.

United:

Craven, Evans, Lynn, Harrison (Yearwood), Bailey, Ashworth, Connelly, Nsomi (Pounds), Gledhill, West, Ricketts.
