United continued their recent run of good form with a 1—0 win at Highmoor Ibis on Saturday thanks to a Dan West strike on 74 minutes.

The hosts, who came in to the game above United in the table, started brightly and created two half chances in the first five minutes, the second of which saw captain Ellis Hercules clear off the line. However, United quickly responded and created their first opportunity on 7 minutes when Luke Ricketts – who gave the Highmoor right back a torrid afternoon – crossed for Ben Gray whose header flew over the bar. Dan West then saw a free kick from 22 yards well saved before, on 20 minutes, Luke Ricketts hit a first time half volley that East in the Highmoor did well to push around the post.

The next opportunity for United came on 37 minutes. Charlie Attwell floated a free kick from the left in to the box and Ellis Hercules rose highest, only to see his header tipped over the bar by East. The final chance of the half fell to West, whose header from a Ben Gray corner also went over the bar.

The second half was a much tighter affair, with the game contained within the central third of the field, and opportunities for either side few and far between. Indeed - other than an early United corner that caused problems for the home defence – United had to wait until the 67th minute for the first real opportunity on goal when Ben Gray just cleared the bar with a half volley. However, the only goal of the game soon arrived, with Dan West collecting a through ball on the wide left, before beating his marker and cutting inside and, from the edge of the box, curling a right foot shot in to the top corner.

For the remainder of the game the home side pushed United back and thought they had equalised on 82 minutes, only for the referee to adjudge that Lee Farrow in the Thame goal had been fouled in the build-up to the goal. That was as good as it got for the home side as United recorded a victory that saw them leap-frog their opponents in to sixth place.
