Headington Amateurs 2 Thame Rangers 3
Patrick Buston with a brace seals victory in the County Cup
Thame Rangers started this County Cup fixture on the front foot and soon took the lead through Patrick Buston. A neat move down the left followed by a pin-point cross from Dan Lynn into the stride of Buston, who calmly placed a first time shot low to the right of Harry Jenkins. Buston and Harry Hawes were causing problems for the home defense and it was not long before the second arrived. Christian Deste’s defense splitting pass put Buston clean through and the young man clinically finished from the edge of the box. Buston had an opportunity to complete his hatrick soon after but Jenkins denied him with a great save. A spell of dominance from Thame Rangers saw Jenkins prevent Rangers going further ahead with more saves from Buston, Hawes and Dan Hatton. The spell of pressure eventually paid off when Dan Gyenes, making his debut beat Jenkins with a volley low to his right from the edge of the box. The half ended with Thame firmly in control.
Knowing what a good side Headington Amateurs are it was to no surprise they came out in the second half fighting to get back in the game and it was not long before they scored their first. Thame nearly made it four from a corner as Deste’s out stretched foot just failed to make the necessary contact from a Hatton delivery, which resulted in a counter attack from the home side with Henry Bone beating two defenders before placing his shot past Dan Bowker. Headington got their second soon after through Oliver Zaja. He took an opportunity given to him from range to reduce Thame’s lead to just one goal. Headington seemed to run out of steam soon after and Thame took back control of the game. Chances came and went and the score line never changed as Thame move on into the next round of the County Cup.
