Wallingford 3 Thame Rangers 4

Patrick Buston and Dan Hatton score a brace each to make it seven straight wins in a row as Thame Rangers beat second placed Wallingford

Wallingford 3 Thame Rangers 4
On a day more suited to wind surfing than football Thame Rangers made better use of the conditions and came out on top, recording their seventh straight win.
A gale was blowing at Wallingford and the grass was longer than you would expect meaning a decent game of football was going to be difficult to produce and so it proved. Probably the worst Thame Rangers have played in their recent good run of form. Wallingford played their part and proved difficult opposition and as early as the fourth minute should have taken the lead but the post saved Thame Rangers as the home sides number nine missed an open goal from five yards. With the wind at their backs, Thame Rangers laid siege on Wallingford’s goal for long periods and the pressure paid off on 25 minutes with an individual piece of skill from Dan Hatton, beating three defenders before placing his shot in the bottom corner from distance to open the scoring. The very same player was involved in the equalizer, handling a cross from the left as he jumped trying to prevent the delivery heading into the danger area giving a penalty away that the home side scored against the run of play to get on equal terms. Soon after Dan Bowker was called upon to keep the scores level and he produced the save of the match when it looked like the home side would take the lead. The goal of the game came on 35 minutes. Patrick Buston unleashed a powerful curling strike from 25 yards that no keeper was going to save; the goal took Thame to the break in the lead.
The second half started and against the wind Thame increased their lead straight away, Buston doubled his tally rounding the keeper after being put clean through by Abdi Farah and slotting home with the outside of his foot from a tight angle. Wallingford were gifted a way back into the game with another penalty. Thame reacted immediately and installed their two goal advantage through a second goal for Hatton. Hatton slotted past the advancing home keeper from the edge of the box. Soon after Bowker was called upon again as a Wallingford attacker raced clean through. Bowkers starting position proved crucial, and he just got to the ball first. With five minutes remaining Wallingdord reduced their deficit to one goal, taking advantage of the weather conditions. A direct free kick near the corner flag was assisted by the strong wind and flew straight in. A tense last few minutes were managed well by the players to secure another three points on the road.

Bowker, Deste, Lynn, J Hawes (Budziszewski), Davis, Faulconbridge, Attwell, Keeble, Buston, Hatton, Farah.
