In picture perfect conditions at The ASM Stadium, a youthful Thame Rangers recorded their biggest league victory of the season so far and a well-deserved three points against a strong experienced Chinnor FC. The impressive Patrick Buston scored another hatrick. That is two in under a week now for the league’s second highest goal scorer. Miles Baxter got one and the pick of the goals was a 35-yard thunderbolt from Charlie Attwell that no keeper would have saved.
The opening exchanges were quite tense as both sides looked to settle and most of the play was inside the middle third, as both teams cancelled each other out in a scrappy opening 20-minute period. Thame Rangers found it difficult to get into their stride but as the game opened up a little they found more space and started to create chances as the game began to flow more. Rangers midfield and front line began linking up better and Craig Faulconbridge had the first opportunity to break the deadlock. His attempted lob sailed just over the bar. Then the goal of the game and up there as one of the best goals ever seen at The ASM Stadium came from Charlie Attwell on 27 minutes. He smashed a powerful unstoppable direct free kick from around 35 yards into the top left corner that no keeper in the World would have saved. A few more half chances came and went for the home side before the break. Chinnor had an excellent opportunity to level the score from the penalty spot just before half time. Player Manager Tom Folley took on the responsibility for Chinnor but Andrew Stringer in goal for Rangers was up to the task and he saved Folleys powerful attempt palming the ball to safety. The half ended with Rangers one up.
The second half started with Chinnor on the front foot and they enjoyed their best spell of the game, which included the equaliser. Stuart Maclellan whipped in a dangerous corner with curl and pace from the left and Tom White was on hand to finish from close range on 56 minutes. Rangers responded immediately through Miles Baxter. Patrick Buston raced clear of the visitors back three and squared to Baxter and he placed his effort in the bottom corner to regain the lead for the home side. From there on in Buston stole the show yet again, completing a second hatrick in under a week in 16 minutes. His first came on 67 minutes when he cleverly lobbed Ben Taunton giving him no chance, his second on 75 minutes when he raced clear and calmly rounded Taunton for an easy tap in. He broke clean through for his third on 83 minutes and placed his effort in the bottom corner to complete the scoring for the day.
A great performance and another three points for Thame Rangers. The side is evolving well and we are improving all the time. With an average age of around 21, we can only get better. Good to see 16 year old Finlay Murray in the team again plus debuts for George Ashworth and Cian Banert, both 17.
