Resurgent Rangers turn it around in cup triumph
Billy leads the way as Aston Clinton swept aside
After a run of three defeats Rangers stopped the slide with an impressive cup performance to overcome decent opposition as well as the elements of cold, wind and rain.
Striker Billy Herbert will take the headlines, scoring a hat-trick and playing a part in all six Thame goals but this was a day when all 13 players shone and answered any questions being asked about them.
Aston Clinton were no pushover, top of the Third Division with powerful forwards and many players we are more used to seeing at the top level of South Bucks football. They had all the appearances of a banana skin.
The first quarter was fiercely contested with both sets of forwards posing a threat but the Rangers back line stood firm while holes were starting to appear in the visitors defence.
The breakthrough came midway through the half when Matt Wiggleworth found Billy Herbert who played in strike partner Jake Dann for a well taken goal. It was soon followed by the goal of the game,Tom Howard and Jake Dann linking to set up Billy Herbert for a stunning volley from the edge of the area.
George Bennetts was outstanding in a tough midfield battle and it was only late in the game that Aston Clinton crumbled. After some clever footwork Herbert scored the decisive third goal well into the second half then saw his cross deflected into the visitors net for an own goal. The Rangers striker completed his own hat-trick before setting up Wiggleworth for Thame's sixth goal. He was applauded off the pitch when he was substituted five minutes from time.
The game ended with a very generous penalty given to the visitors. It denied Eddie Hart his first clean sheet of the season but couldnt take away from a very satisfying return to form. Well done 13 stars.
