Trophies for Billy, Eddie and Jake but credit to all as Rangers celebrate season in Div 1
Thame say goodbye to Under 18 football with late flourish to climb off bottom
Thame Rangers held what could be their final get together to mark the end of a tough but enjoyable season in the First Division of the South Bucks Under 18 League. Results may not always have gone their way but the Thame boys looked at home at this level and were involved in some desperately close matches settled by a touch of class or a lapse in concentration.
For the second consecutive season Jake Dann won the Golden Boot award having finished top scorer with 17 goals. His strike partner Billy Herbert missed out on that trophy by a single goal but was voted Player of the Season by his teammates while goalkeeper Eddie Hart took the coaches and supporters award for his performances in his debut season with the team.
The season had ended with a double challenge ,matches against Aylesbury and Berkhamsted on the final Sunday. Rangers started the day bottom of the league but matched high riding Aylesbury for most of the first game before being undone by a couple of unfortunate mistakes.
So the battle to escape the foot of the table came down to the second match against Berkhamsted. When the two met earlier in the season Rangers had been missing their entire forward line and went down to defeat by the only goal. One of the strikers absent that day was Billy Herbert and he demonstrated what a difference he can make with a goal in each half. As a result of a 2-0 win Thame climbed above Ruislip which was satisfying on many levels as they have not been the most pleasant of opponents over the last two seasons.
Every player received a medal to remember their days as a Ranger. The team has seen many changes over the last three years with an amalgamation of Thame and Risborough Rangers followed this season by an influx of players from Crendon. In the circumstances the team spirit forged and the friendships made have been exceptional.
The future is uncertain for this group of players as some will now be heading for college or University. Manager Kevin Bennetts pointed out that the club was trying to find a suitable league for an Under 21 team so anyone interested should stay in touch with Kevin. To everyone who has played, coached, helped or supported over the last three years thank you and good luck.
