Thame Youth U16s narrowly beaten in the League Cup final!
By Mark Britton
So so close to a memorable Cup final win against Division 1 opposition
After knocking out division 1 opposition in previous rounds are lads were looking to deliver another giant killing performance at Flackwell Heath FC in the U16s League Cup final!
The lads started well and had a couple of early efforts narrowly going wide, but Ickenham are a good organised side and have certainly improved since their semi final. They came back at us and Thame keeper Matthews made 3 outstanding saves to keep us in the game. With great defending from the back four we were happy to go into half time at 0-0 but we it gave the lads a great chance for the second half.
A couple of changes saw Mather and Pickup come on into the midfield and immediately make a positive impact with his pace and we started to apply the pressure looking much sharper second half but the game was very finely balanced and we our lads look as good as our division 1 opposition for long stretches of the game. They pressed us down the wings constantly and Man of the Match Hall on the right and Merchant on the left help stave off the waves of attacks until they finally broke through got into the penalty area to set up the easiest of finishes with 10 minutes to go.
We looked shocked but immediately launched attack after attack with at least 4 attempts going agonizingly wide. Our luck had just run out and the final whistle went.
On balance Ickenham had the better chances but we ran them close and to reach the league cup final knocking out the Div1 winners this season and last seasons Div 1 winners is an incredible acheivement but I know its still a big disappointment, but we gave them a game they will remember and the lads did themselves and us proud!
After Matthews heroics in goal he was presented with a superb man of the match trophy from the league for an absolutely awesome display, well done ! and well done to all the lads for a great game of football!!
