Hard afternoon in the sun for Thame Colts

The Risborough tournament was played off in glorious conditions in a 7 team group format that meant there were over 3 hours between Thame's first and last matches. It was a bit of a marathon in the heat and Thame rather got lost around the 20 mile mark before finishing with a tremendous gallop.

The opening match against Aylesbury was excellent: crisp passing and movement, with Nikhil and George B controlling the opposition forwards and James, Eddie and Scott linking well and creating excellent chances. From one of these Scott stepped up and hit a splendid free kick over the wall only to be tipped over the bar by the opposition keeper. 0-0 and a good start.

Playing the then group leaders Tring, Thame conceded one good goal and one unfortunate one, perhaps showing the effects of an hour between first and second fixture. Against Hughenden, Thame were a bit dozy before James Grant's goal led to a stronger finish, and a close 2-1 defeat. James again stood out against Downley with a series of long range shots that tested the keeper before the opposition pulled away.

By the time we played Aston Clinton we were reduce to a slightly chaotic desperation, but the team regrouped for a barnstorming finish against the tournament hosts. Eddie, Scott and Drew all went close before a second goal on the day for James settled it. After "beating" Risborough 2-2, 0-0 and 0-0 in earlier tournaments this was a proper win and well-deserved.

Player of the tournament was James G who troubled all the opposition defences and showed an eye for goal, closely followed by Nikhil and George B who defended well and showed enterprise coming forward. George W did well in goal, brave and sometimes brilliant.

When we got the ball down and played at a higher tempo we probably played the best football in the group, which was dominated by a more direct approach.

Next tournament-Thame.
