Thame secure first league win!
Thame were missing skipper Sturgess so it was David Lynn who wore the armband.
It may have taken 5 games but it has been worth the wait. The team looked organised and it looked like a different team dynamic out there on the pitch. This was against a WGC side that had been unbeaten in the league.
This fixture was the debut of Ryan Blake who hands down was man of the match today! He caused havoc all afternoon for the WGC side.
Ryan's work rate off the ball led to winning the ball before crossing the ball towards Wear for a tap in and to give Thame the lead on 19 minutes.
Thame did step off the gas and a silly foul lead to a free kick near the corner flag. This was taken by Ironton who flighted the ball towards the jumping McCelland who headed the ball 8 yards out and across the goal to find the back of the net. It was a battle to the end and the Thame defence/ midfield held firm winning headers, tackles and blocking shots. There was a late great save by Hill in the 88th minute when he had to push the ball over the bar from a direct free kick.
Today also saw the return of Marcus Mealing who showed guts to step up and take a penalty which proved to be the winning goal on 53 minutes. Also Lynn had to come off the pitch on 80 minutes and was replaced by new signing Balogun.
This will be a memorable result for Westy's Red and black army in which may well prove to be the spark to set the red kites flying up the league table.
There will also be a sense of relief in the dressing room as now #DL3 will be shaving the goatee beard following the first league win haha.
