Frozen Out

Frozen Out

Martin Pacetti3 Jan - 17:56

It was the weather that won the day today.

It was a day of frustration for our senior adult teams with frozen pitches and a bizarre refereeing decision meaning all five games were postponed.

The first game to be called off was the first teams match against Aylesbury in Chesham, after an initial inspection on Friday there was a thin layer of snow on top of a frozen pitch with temperatures for the next 24 hours remaining at or below freezing in consolation with the league the match was postponed later in the afternoon, as there was little chance of the pitch thawing out and game going ahead.

The reserve team were due to play Chipping Sodbury in the Hellenic League division one on the main stadium pitch but after an 11am pitch inspection and in consultation with the league the game was called off with the ground rock hard, the decision being made before the opposition set out on there 180 mile round trip.

In the Aylesbury and District league, the C team were due to play Hemel Rovers on pitch two but that was like a skating rink so again called off before the opposition had travelled.

The B team was due to play St Leonard’s in Berkhamsted and early call was made to call off the game due to a frozen pitch.

The most bizarre decision of the day, came in the Oxfordshire Senior League where Thame A were due to play Summertown stars. The game was originally due to take place on grass but was moved to the 3G pitch.

Both teams had arrived and were about to warm up when the referee arrived and decided that the game could not be played as the wind chill made it too cold and a health and safety issue.

Odd as a number of youth teams and the first team had trained on the pitch before hand.

Another referee from a different league had said he we ref the game, but couldn't as the originally referee had postponed it.

The two teams then went onto play a friendly match.

One has to ask the question was it too cold for the teams or just for the referee!!!

On his logic every game in England today should have been postponed.
