Hertford Town vs Thame United Match Report 1 February

Martin Pacetti2 Feb - 09:14

Victory on the road against a good Hertford side

Thame United were back in the Pitching In Southern League Central Division One action on Saturday when they travelled to Hertfordshire to face Hertford Town. This was going to be a tough test for the play off chasing side as Hertford were unbeaten in there last eight matches and lost only once in twelve.

Manager Ben Williams was forced into making changes to the eleven that started in the victory against Kidlington in midweek, with Tom McElroy suspended, Brayden Daniel returned to the starting line up. There was a return to the bench for Fin Murray who had recovered from a tight hamstring and for Greg Hackett who had been away.

Thame got the game underway, kicking from left to right on the Hertingfordbury Park 3G pitch. The visitors started the game well pressing the home side high up the pitch and the early pressure paid off when a good move from midfield played in Ethan Lack who ran in on goal and fired in a low shot across the keeper an into the bottom left hand corner. Thame nearly had a second moments later when a cross come shot from the right hand side takes a deflection and bounces off the top of the crossbar.

The home side reacted strongly using the full backs to push forward and overlap the wingers creating problems for the visitors full backs. And the pressure was building, with keeper Matty Crowther pulling off two good saves in quick succession, at the other end two chances for Thame, one brought out a good save from the Hertford keeper the other well over the bar from long range. The equaliser came on 37 minutes, a break on the left saw the Hertford left winger drive into the box, his shot was saved by keeper Crowther but could only parry the ball into the path of Riley Carr who taps home. Although Hertford’s corner count was rising as the half progressed, they were all to predictable with every one floated into the six yard box and keeper Crowther was doing a great job of claiming every one.

An entertaining first half ended with the game tied at 1 - 1. The second have got underway with Hertford continuing to dominate possession but Thame were allowing them to play the ball around in front of them and were fairly comfortable sitting deep and countering. Thame made their first Substitute on 58 minutes with Leo Galpin limping off and replaced by Fin Murray, and Curtis Brown replaced by Harry Alexander, neither team were creating chances but defensively Thame were playing very well. Greg Hackett replaced goal scored Ethan lack on 77 minutes. The visitors were starting to get a bit more of the ball and were causing Hertford a few issues at the back. Jefferson Louis was the final change for Thame replacing Ty Deacon who had worked hard up front on his own. The tide had turned and Thame were now on the front foot, Harry Alexander and Greg Hackett were now running at the home sides back four, who were under pressure. Thame won a couple of corners and from the second one on 89 minutes scored what was to be the winning goal. Jack Tutton played the ball into the box it wasn’t cleared properly and bounced around before being headed out only to fall to an incoming Fin Murray who connected well and fired into the back of the net from 10 yards.

The referee added 7 minutes on at the end of 90 minutes but the visitors were comfortable in seeing the time out to come away with a great victory on the road, with the game plan working restricting the home side to very few chances in the second half. Three wins in seven days moves Thame onto the same points as Barton with a game in hand.

Next up is the visit of Stotfold to The ASM Stadium on Tuesday night.
