Thame United head to Dorset this Saturday to take on Portland United in the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy. This will be the first time the two teams have met. Portland United, nicknamed the Blues, play in the Southern League Division One South after earning promotion for the 2026/27 season by winning the Velocity Wessex League Premier Division play-off final.
They finished third in the regular season before recording a 2–0 semi-final victory over Andover New Street. They went on to win the play-off final 5–3 on penalties against Laverstock & Ford, following a 0–0 draw after extra time.
It was a historic milestone for the club, as it marked the first time Portland United had reached Step 4. It is also the first time they have played in the FA Trophy since the 1969/70 season. This season, they have gone further in the competition than previously, advancing by beating Hungerford Town 3–1 in the first qualifying round.
Meanwhile, Thame reached this stage of the competition with a 1–0 away victory over fellow Southern League Division One South side Westbury United, with Ed Daffern scoring the only goal. Since their opening-day home defeat to Royston, Thame have gone on a five-match unbeaten run in league and cup matches.
Interestingly, both teams are currently tenth in their respective leagues. Each side has played three games, recording one win, one draw and one defeat, leaving them both on four points. Last time out, Portland bowed out of the FA Cup following a 2–1 away defeat to AFC Porchester. In the same competition, Thame overcame Reading City 3–2 in a hard-fought encounter. If the scores are level at full time, the match will go straight to penalties. The winner will go into the hat for the third qualifying round, which will be played on Saturday, 26 September. The draw will take place on Monday, 14 September.
Kick Off at the The Camp & Satherley Stadium is !5:00
