Reading Town (1) 2 Thame United (0) 2

United came away from Reading with a point, but it felt like a defeat as Reading equalised with the last kick of the match

Reading came in to the game pointless in the league, but introduced a new, experienced pairing up-front, and wing backs brought in from Conference side Hayes and Yeading.

However, despite the influx of players it was United who started the strongest and they could, and should, have been ahead inside the first five minutes of the match. In a mad thirty seconds both Alex Stewart and Adam Rhodes hit the woodwork, whilst Stewart went close shortly afterwards. Reading then started to get in to the game and created chances of their own as the tricky wing backs began to cause problems with their pace. After a couple of good chances, Reading took the lead midway through the half when the striker beat keeper Lee Farrow low to his right from close range. United were unable to find an equaliser and went in to half time a goal down.

Whatever was said at half time worked as, within twenty minutes of the re-start, United were ahead. The first goal arrived on 53 minutes when good play between Luke Ricketts and Matt Hall down the Thame left resulted in a cross to the edge of the six yard box that Alex Stewart met on the volley to steer over the head of Reading keeper Nathan Silver. Then, ten minutes later, Stewart flicked on a long throw from Matt Hall and Adam Rhodes (pictured) had time to control the ball and pick his spot from close range. By this time United were on top and came close to extending the lead when Silver did well to push a near post header from substitute Aaron Bonham around the post.

With time running out United began to drop deeper and Reading deployed a longer ball game, albeit the home attacks were generally dealt with comfortably by the Thame defence. That was until the 93rd minute when, following a ball in to the Thame box, Graham Lewis turned and rifled the ball past Farrow to earn his side their first point of the season from their first shot of the half.
