Thame United: 3 - 1 Enfield Match Report

Thame United hosted Enfield FC at the ASM Stadium in a Southern League Division One Central fixture, with Thame sitting mid-table and Enfield Struggling near the foot of the table. This was the first meeting between the two sides this season, though they had faced off twice in the previous campaign, with Thame coming out on top in both games. The teams observed a minute's silence before kick off with Enfield getting the game under way, kicking from right to left into the sun which made it difficult to see the ball. Manager Ben Williams, had two absentees from the midweek squad with Abu Khan ill and Greg Hackett suspended, he welcomed back Archie Davis in goal after recovering from injury and Lance Williams to the bench.

Thame started brightly, creating early chances and winning a series of corners which came to nothing. Louis Walsh had the first real opening for Thame a shot from the edge of the area going wide to the right hand side. Enfield were looking dangerous on the counter and keeper Davis was forced into a good save from a shot from just outside the area. The home side should have taken the lead on 22 minutes, some good work on the left by Louis Walsh found Mark Riddick on the corner of the 18 yard area his cross into the box was met by Jenson Wright who had broken free of the two centre backs but his header was onto the cross bar. Curtis Brown who was playing at right back then had another chance on the right hand side but his long range shot was pushed out for a corner. Enfield were awarded a penalty on 26 minutes, Thame failed to clear a ball that had been launched into their box, as it fell at the feet of the number 12 he was brought down, no arguments from the Thame players, Enfield's number 7 and leading scorer Jon Vukaj stepped up and slammed his shot against the left hand post and it was cleared. Back at the other end another chance for Thame some good build up play around the edge of the area with Harry Alexander laying the ball off to Jack Tutton whose first time shot was just wide.

The dead lock was broken on 31 minutes. Thame won the ball back in their own half, Jack Tutton picked it up and played a long ball along the ground to Louis Walsh with his back to goal around forty yards out. His first time lay off into the path of Dan West, beat the Enfield defence and allowed the number 10 to run in on goal, round the keeper and slot the ball into an empty net, a well worked goal from the home side and they continued to press forward, with Callum Hall taking his chance with a long range effort just wide of the right hand post. Enfield were still in the game and forced a good save from keeper Davis. With the clock ticking down to end the first half Enfield were awarded a free kick, which the Thame players were unhappy with, it looked as if the referee had played advantage and allowed the Enfield winger to run in on goal, when he was tackled he bought the play back for what looked like nothing more than a slight coming together. From the kick just outside the box on the right the number 6 stepped up and placed the ball over the wall and into the top right hand corner with keeper Davis getting a hand on it but couldnt keep the ball out. A well taken free kick brought the scores level and thats the way it remained at the end of the half.

The second half got underway then almost immediately Thame could have taken the lead, Louis Walsh picked up the ball on the left crossed it into the box and Jenson Wright stole in between the centre backs but his shot from the six yard box was over the bar. Dan West then flick a ball on from a corner, but Louis Walsh couldn't turn and get his shot on target. At the other end Enfield had a golden chance to take the lead, a back pass from Curtis brown didn't reach keeper Davis and was picked up by the Enfield left winger, his shot beat the keeper but just went wide of the far post. From a Thame corner Dan West had a free header but just put the ball wide of the post. Then on 64 minutes there was a coming together between the Thame Captain Mark Riddick and the Enfield goal keeper. Jack Tutton played a ball over the top into the right hand side of the goal, as the keeper came out and Mark Riddick slid in he caught the keeper and after a lengthly lay off for treatment the keeper couldn't continue. The referee issued a yellow card to the Thame captain for a reckless challenge, albeit the away team wanted more and continue to surround the referee whilst the treatment was going on. Play resumed with Enfield’s captain Mark Hurley taking over in goal as there was no substitute keeper on the bench.

Thame continued to push forward and got their reward on 84 minutes, a free kick taken on the left was whipped into the box, Lance Williams got a flick on and it fell to Fin Murray who turned and fired the ball into the roof of the net for his second in two games. The visitors tried to come back with a couple of long range efforts well over the bar and as Enfield looked for the equaliser gaps were appearing at the back and Thame exploited that 6 minutes into added time, with Curtis Brown picking up a cross field ball on the right cutting back in across the 18 yard line, his shot took a slight deflection and nestled into the left hand side of the goal. And that finished of the action with Thame deservedly coming out on top in the second half after a close first half where the visitors gave a good account of them selves. We now move onto Tuesday night where we welcome Milton Keynes Irish to The ASM Stadium.
