Thame United welcome Exmouth Town to the ASM Stadium for this Emirates FA Cup second qualifying-round match. This weekend, 160 teams will take part in 80 ties in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. The remaining Step Four and Step Five teams from the previous three rounds are joined by 48 Step Two teams from the National League North and South divisions. For the qualifying rounds, the remaining teams are split into zones for the draw. Both teams are in Zone Five, which covers an area from Oxfordshire to the south coast, Devon and Cornwall.
Exmouth currently ply their trade in the Southern League Division One South. They first entered the FA Cup in the 1934 season and have reached the fourth qualifying round twice, but this is the furthest they have progressed since reforming in 2006. This season, they started their campaign in the extra preliminary round with a 3–0 victory over Bovey Tracey, followed by a 3–1 home victory against Bridgwater United. In the last round, they defeated Step Three side Banbury United after a replay, drawing 0–0 at Banbury before winning 2–1 at home.
Thame made their first-ever appearance in the prestigious competition during the 1976–77 season. Aside from a three-season gap between 1985 and 1988, they have participated in every edition of the tournament, with their best performances coming in the 2003–04 and 2004–05 seasons, when they reached the fourth qualifying round.
Last season, the club came through the preliminary round with a 3–1 away victory at Clevedon Town, before going down 2–1 to Step Three side Chertsey Town in the first qualifying round. This season, Thame secured a fairly comfortable victory in the preliminary round, beating Brislington FC 7–1 at the ASM Stadium, followed by a difficult encounter with Reading City, eventually coming out on top 3–2. However, the Red Kites have not progressed beyond this round for 22 years.
This is the first time the two teams have met in any competition. The visitors to the ASM Stadium this weekend currently sit in sixth place in Division One South of the Southern League, with three wins and a draw from their four games, but they were knocked out of the FA Trophy in the first qualifying round. Meanwhile, following the opening-day league defeat, Thame have remained unbeaten in seven games and have won six in a row, reaching the FA Trophy third qualifying round as well Both teams have recorded midweek victories, so confidence will be high.
If the tie is level at full time, there will be a replay on Wednesday 23 September, with kick-off at 19:45, at King George V Playing Fields, Southern Road, Exmouth, EX8 3EE. This would mean that our away game against Aylesbury would have to be rearranged.
The winner will advance to the third qualifying round, which will be played on Saturday 5 October.
Kick Off at the ASM Stadium is 15:00
