Thame United vs Flackwell Heath Match Report 14th February

Martin Pacetti15 Feb - 18:42

A remarkable come back from Thame United to make it ten games unbeaten.

Thame United 4 - 3 Flackwell Heath

Thame United were back at home in the Pitching in Southern League Division One Central, when they welcomed their near neighbours Flackwell Heath (The Heathens) to the ASM Stadium, hoping to continue their nine match unbeaten beaten run. When the two teams met earlier in the season at Wilkes Park it was Thame who ran out winners 2 - 1 with two first half goals from Dan West and Curtis Brown. The Heathens are currently sitting in twelfth place in the table, a little way off where they were last season, while Thame were hoping to continue where they left off with a 5 - 1 demolition away at London Lions last week. Manager Ben Williams was able to keep the same starting line up for the third successive match running, with one absentee on the bench from last week with Leo Galpin missing through illness.

With the heavy rain over the last few days a precautionary pitch inspection was carried out at 11am with local ref in conjunction with the match referee the pitch was deemed fit to play. Thame got the game under way kicking towards the main road end and into the sun, which was behind the visitors goal, but it was the visitors who were on the front foot and had the first chance with a minute played when the number 9 Eli Grant had a long range shot wide of the goal, and followed that up a few minutes later with the number 9 Grant breaking free on the right but his shot from the edge of the box was over the bar. At the other end Thame won a corner on the right, which was cleared to Callum Hall who was fouled, the free kick was taken by Jack Tutton, the ball in was cleared and eventually recycled to Louis Walsh who’s shot rolled through to the keeper. Flackwell were awarded with a free kick on the right deep in Thame on the right hand side which was floated into the box and header over. The visitors had started the game the better and were dominating the game and putting pressure on the Thame midfield and defence and created another chance on 14 minutes when the number 7 Jamie Ayres was played into the box on the right, but his shot was well saved by keeper Matty Crowther pushing the ball out for the corner. The Flackwell number 9 Grant was causing the Thame defence all sorts of problems with his direct running and was bought down on 17 minutes by Ethan Lack on the left hand edge of the box, the Flackwell number 8 Matty Ayres stepped up and played the ball into the box it missed everyone and bounced past keeper Crowther and into the net.

The visitors extended their lead within two minutes of the restart, with the number 9 Grant again a willing runner in behind the Thame defence, this time chasing a ball down, with Luke Tingey reaching the ball first and playing it back to keeper Crowther who mis kicked the ball straight back to the number 7 Ayres on the edge of the box, who calmly chipped the ball back into the net. Two nil to the visitors and Thame looking all out of sorts and you could hardly believe they were on a nine match unbeaten streak. But it was about to go from bad to worse as Flackwell continued to apply pressure to the Thame goal and after winning a corner on the right hand side the ball was played into the box and met by number 8 Jamie Ayres to head his second goal unchallenged, the home side looked dead and buried there nil down after 29 minutes. The third goal seemed to be the catalysts for Thame to wake up and stage a remarkable recovery, within two minutes of the goal Thame had pulled one back, Jack Tutton picking the ball up on the right, playing in Harry Alexander who chipped the ball into the penalty area were Dan West was running in and headed the ball past the visitors keeper. Two minutes later Thame had a second, Harry Alexander playing in Ethan Lack on the right hand side he crossed the ball and it was volleyed in at the back post by an unmarked Louis Walsh. Thame continued to press with the visitors now on the back foot, and on 41 minutes the home side had an equaliser, Dan West’s overhead kick into the visitors box was met by Louis Walsh who ran in between two defenders to fire the ball past the keeper. But Thame weren’t finished there, after winning a corner on the left the ball was played in by Jack Tutton and was met by an unmarked Fin Murray who powered his header into the roof of the net on 45 minutes. Thame had scored four goals in fourteen minutes to end the half 4 - 3 in the lead with the visitors going off the field at half time shaking their heads after the collapse.

The second half began with Flackwell trying to get back into the game but it was Thame who had the first chance of the half with Harry Alexander firing over from the edge of the box, followed by a Louis Walsh free kick from the left hand edge of the box after Jack Tutton had been brought down, but his shot was over the bar. It was almost fifteen minutes into the half before the visitors troubled the Thame goal, a shot from the edge of the box tamely running through to keeper Crowther. Thame should have made it five on 58 minutes, some good work on the left by Louis Walsh played the ball into the box for an unmarked Dan West but his header was straight at the keeper. Flackwell then won a free kick on the edge of the Thame box in a central position but the number 8 Ayres could only fire his shot over the bar, and then another shot from the edge of the box was saved by Keeper Crowther. Thame had tightened up defensively in the second half and the visitors were not finding any space in behind the the back four, like they did in the opening 30 minutes and were left to shoot from range.

As the visitors looked for the equaliser the game was opening up at the back and Thame had several chances to increase their lead, with 10 minutes to go Curtis Brown fired over the bar from the edge of the area after being played in by Jack Tutton. Louis Walsh played in Dan West on the edge of the box, but his shot was deflected out for a corner. The corner went over every ones head and eventually was played back to Curtis Brown on the edge of the area, but his shot was wide to the right of the goal. As the game entered five minutes of added time, there were more chances for Thame to add more, a long ball over the top saw with Louis Walsh and Harry Alexander both following the ball in but Alexander's shot was over the bar, probably had more time to take a touch, Then Curtis Brown had two more chances one which was save by the keeper the other over the bar. Thame made their first and only substitution on 93 minutes with Charlie Stow replacing Louis Walsh for the final two minutes, which the home side saw out to seal a remarkable come back victory from three goals down and to record ten games unbeaten and in the end deserved the three points the only surprise in the second half was that they didn't add to their goal tally.
