United Victorious in First Pre-Season Friendly

United Victorious in First Pre-Season Friendly

Jake Collinge19 Jul 2014 - 21:32

United beat their South Midlands League opponents, Risborough Rangers, 4-1 at a blistering ASM Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Whilst the United starting line-up contained a number of familiar faces, new signing from Oxford City Nomads, Adam Morris, began in central midfield, with Martin Brown returning to the Club at centre back, and Josh Cockerill replacing Lee Farrow in goal.

And it did not take United long to get in to their stride as they opened the scoring after only two minutes. Matt Hall played a through ball to Luke Ricketts whose effort was parried by the visiting keeper, but only in to the path of Dan West who headed home from close range. Five minutes later and United nearly extended their lead as a well placed effort from Ricketts came back off the post. However, it was not all one way traffic and former United player Lawrence Clark almost found the equaliser when his effort from 20 yards came back off the crossbar after 10 minutes.

United hit the woodwork again after half an hour, this time following a deflected shot fro Shannon Jesson. Five minutes before the break and the second goal arrived when Luke Ricketts raced clear from just inside the visitors half and decisively placed the ball wide of the visiting keeper. If United thought they could relax before half time they were wrong, as Rangers pulled a goal back on 42 minutes when a well-placed cross from the right was met by Danny Gray at the far post who gave Cockerill no chance.

After the break United made a number of changes and reverted to a 4-4-2 formation, immediately putting the visitors on the back foot. The third goal eventually arrived on 57 minutes when a free kick was awarded from 30 yards and Morris struck a fine effort that crashed back off the bar to debutant Andrew Gledhill who finished confidently. It was four two minutes later as a through ball from West found Jordan Davis on the wide left whose first time lob beat the stranded Rangers keeper. It was nearly five on 60 minutes as an effort from Gledhill was well saved.

There were few chances in the remainder of the game as United played out a relatively comfortable win.

Southern league side Aylesbury FC visit the ASM Stadium on Tuesday evening in the second friendly of the season.
