United ended their season in style with a 7-2 victory against Reading Town at Scours Lane on Tuesday evening.

After a quiet opening fifteen minutes, in which Matt Tapping in the Thame goal was the busier of the two keepers, United began to assert themselves on the game. Indeed, after 16 minutes Andy Gledhill was close to breaking the deadlock when he glanced a header from a Ben Connelly cross on to the post. However, it was Gledhill who gave United the lead on 24 minutes, finishing from close range after the home side had failed to clear a corner. And it was 2-0 five minutes later when a Reading Town player was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, with Dan West confidently placing the spot kick to the left of Sam Green. With United on top, the third goal arrived just before the break. Captain Adam Morris struck a free kick from 25 yards low to the right of Green that the keeper could only push in to the path of Ellis Hercules who finished well from close range.

The opening fifteen minutes of the second half were all United, with the home side struggling to get out of their half. Chances came – and went – with West, Luke Ricketts and Gledhill all going close. However, it was the home side who got a goal back on 66 minutes, Whitaker finishing well when put through on goal. It was 3-2 only two minutes later when United failed to clear a corner and Helmore struck a powerful shot from 15 yards. The fight back was, however, short lived with Captain Adam Morris restoring the lead on 76 minutes, placing the ball wide of Green from the edge of the box. Hercules got his second goal of the game on 83 minutes, heading home at the far post before Gledhill also got his second a minute later, hitting a speculative effort from 25 yards that Green spilled in to the back of the net. The scoring was completed two minutes from time, Ricketts finishing well from an acute angle.
The win pushes United back up to fifth in the table, a position that they could retain depending on results elsewhere, but which guarantees at least a seventh place finish
