After an impressive opening day win at Sutton Coldfield Town, United opened their home league campaign on Tuesday evening against North Leigh.

The visitors, who in recent meetings had the upper hand over United, also came in to the match having won their opening fixture, a 3-1 win over Dunstable United.

United started with the same eleven as the Sutton Coldfield match, and were quickly out-of-the-blocks taking the lead after only two minutes. Smart play from the back released Duran Martin who followed up his first goal for the Club on Saturday by coolly slotting the ball wide of Saunders from 18 yards. It was almost two five minutes later when a cross the left evaded both Marcus Mealing and Ben Sturgess, when a touch from either would have lead to an almost certain goal.

Gradually the visitors got in to the game and on 12 minute former United striker Martin Griggs pounced on hesitation in the home defence with his effort beating Craig Hill only to come back off the bar. Deep cross-field balls were becoming effective for the visitors and, on 22 minutes, one of these led to a free kick on the left-hand edge of the box. The free kick was pushed sideways and Alfie Saunders hit an effort low to the right of Hill and in to the back of the net. The remainder of the half generally saw North Leigh the more threatening, but Hill was rarely called in to action.

The opening to the second half was as explosive as the first half, but this time it was North Leigh who took the lead. George Seacole collected the ball in midfield and went on a powerful, winding run in to the box and, despite being pushed wide by Hill, he remained composed to finish from an acute angle. The lead only lasted four minutes when United hit back through captain Ben Sturgess. Mealing did well on the left and, from the by-line, crossed to the far post where Sturgess was unmarked to finish comfortably.

Having reverted to a 4-4-2 formation at the break, United were now pressing North Leigh deep in their own half and cutting off the supply of long balls, regularly collecting the second ball and controlling possession. After Liam Tack had seen a free kick come back off the woodwork on 57 minutes, the winning goal arrived on 69 minutes when a well-worked move through the centre split-open the North Leigh defence with the decisive pass from Sturgess finding Liam Tack who finished confidently.

Substitute Andy Gledhill then forced a good save from Saunders on 76 minutes, before Harry Scott, on his debut, saw Saunders smoother his effort when clean through. Tack then almost got his second five minutes from time, hitting a powerful effort from the edge of the box that Saunders tipped over the bar. Nevertheless, United were indebted to Hill who, on 88 minutes, managed to get down to push a powerful effort from Rodger James wide of the post.

United held on to the win to make it a maximum return from the opening two league fixtures before welcoming Berkhamsted to the ASM Stadium on Saturday in the FA Cup.
