United moved to the top of the Premier Division following a 3-2 win against Ascot United on Tuesday evening.

Whilst Mark West named an unchanged side from the team that had defeated Tuffley Rovers on Saturday, the opening exchanges belonged to the visitors, with United unable to generate any sustained possession in the opposition half. Indeed, the first chance of the half led to the opening goal as trickery from Charlie Samuels on the left saw the ball delivered in to the box where James Goodey was on hand to force the ball home at the far post.

The goal seemed to galvanise United and they were on level terms 5 minutes later. Lynton Goss picked the ball up on the edge of the centre circle and went on a mazy diagonal run that, by the time he had reached the corner of the box, saw him confronted by Dennison in the visiting goal and, having pushed the ball beyond the keeper, he was hauled over with the referee immediately pointing to the spot. Goss composed himself to drive the spot kick low in to the bottom corner of the goal.

By this time, United were the dominant side and, after a deep cross saw a Matt Johnston header pushed over the bar, United took the lead from the resulting corner. The centre from Goss was met by the head of Dan West who glanced the ball wide of the keeper. Further chances came, and went, for United with West and Tom Ashworth heading over when well placed.

Leading 2-1 at half time, the third United goal arrived within two minutes of the re-start. Goss dispossessed a defender before heading goalwards and sliding the ball through to West, whose well-placed shot settled in the bottom corner. Whilst, in the next ten minutes, United had further possession they did not create any significant chances and, gradually, Ascot started to enjoy both territory and possession. However, the defence was well-marshalled by Ellis Hercules and Johnston, to the extent that Craven in the Thame goal was rarely troubled. That was until the 93rd minute when Samuels hit an effort from 25 yards that took a deflection off a home defender and wrong-footed Craven.

However, it was too little to late and shortly afterwards the referee blew for full time, with the three points taking United to the summit of the Premier Division

United: Craven, Evans, Lynn, Hercules, Johnston, Ashworth, Connelly, Goss, Morris, West Ricketts.
